How to train a dog to sleep in his own bed?
We are purchasing our dog his very own dog bed. This dog has slept with us every night since he was an 8 month ancient puppy. We have tried transitioning him into his crate for sleeping at night, snorts and whines all night. Been doing that 4 two weeks. But he despises the crate. We tried for 2 weeks leaving him out in the same area as our Terrier but all the whining and the fact he kept bugging her, got him bit. He was just sleeping on a blanket but he didn’t sleep at all.
Here is our thought:
We are going to buy a small dog bed, he is a small dog. And we are going to initiation by having him sleep in it on our bed for a few nights. Then we are going to go his bed to the floor and have him sleep in it there for a few nights. And then the bed will be went into the other room and he will sleep in it there from then on.
Now obviously it won’t go that smooth and we have roughtly 10 and a half weeks to get him trained to sleep elsewhere. So what are some tips or a excellent training outline to get him sleeping in his own bed away from us.
ADD: He is 2 being ancient.
Also if you know of any websites with info that pertains to dogs sleeping on their own after sleeping with owners for awhile, that would be fantastic to know about.
Thanks we appreciate it
Ice and Cripton: Thats what we did without the doggy bed. He has been gated in our closet with our other dog and he just got worse as the weeks passed by, we tried crated too.
So we thought if we taught him to sleep in his own bed, he would see that it didn’t matter if his bed was on our bed or somewhere else since that bed was his bed. We are also lacking to teach him that the only time he is allowed on the furniture is if his bed is on the furniture and he has to be in it
He was crate trained as a puppy. He goes in is crate whenever we are not home. Despises it though when we are home.
Sailor Mars: No we do not let him out when he cries. As much as I want to being 7 months pregnant and sleep deprived we make him stay in there all night. And we are ready to try a touch new.
Our other dog we were able to pack up her crate for excellent months ago. But she can be trusted loose when we aren’t home and all night.
